Richard Festinger has been a prominent and highly regarded figure in American contemporary music since the early 1980’s. In his article on Festinger’s recordings in the Journal of the Society for American Music, Joshua Levine writes of Festinger’s work as “vibrant, skillfully wrought… intellectually and viscerally compelling music.” WQXR Radio has called him “an American master.” Then and Now offers a selection of five of Festinger's chamber works written over a span of more than two decades, from the intensely frothy 1996 woodwind quinter, Windsongs, to the classically inspired 2022 piano trio, Il était une fois.... The disk also includes the 2019 reed quintet, Invocation, with it's complex, interwoven lines; the unusually rich 2001 duo, To a Pilgrim, for bass clarinet and cello, with its affectionate tone; and the shimmering, neo-impressionist sextet, Hidden Spring, for flute, oboe, violin, cello and two guitars.
